 The Parks Charge

Local Port Manager

Parks Victoria is the Local Port Manager for the designated ports of Port Phillip, Western Port (including the navigable reaches of smaller creeks and tributaries) and Port Campbell under section 44 of the Port Services Act 1995 (Vic).

Under this legislation, Parks Victoria is responsible for ensuring the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of port operations. This is achieved through the management of port infrastructure including piers and jetties, aids to navigation, moorings and berths and dredging as well as the preparation and implementation of Safety and Environment Management Plans.

The commercial ports within Port Phillip and Western Port are managed by either the Port of Melbourne or the Victorian Regional Channels Authority. The shipping channels and infrastructure are managed by the commercial port operators not Parks Victoria.

Waterways Manager

Parks Victoria is the Waterway Manager for following waters under the Marine Act 1988:

Under this legislation, Parks Victoria is responsible for the management and control of vessel activities and the maintenance of navigational aids and appropriate signage.

Public facilities within the Ports managed by Parks Victoria include 45 piers and jetties and their associated harbours, approximately 2,500 moorings, 1,000 aids to navigation, 13 dredged channels, and a multitude of boat ramps, wharves, breakwaters, sea walls and other structures.
