Lyrebirds return to Kinglake National Park
21 Jul 2009

Parks Victoria's annual Lyrebird Survey has found that there are signs that Lyrebirds have returned to the Kinglake National Park following the Black Saturday bushfires.

The Lyrebird survey has been held since the 1980s and over the years information has been collect on the Superb Lyrebirds ( Menura novaehollandiae ), behaviour, distribution and population trends throughout the park.

This year's survey was held in conjunction with Friends of the Lyrebirds, Friends of Kinglake National Park, Parks Victoria and many other enthusiastic volunteers.

The dawn survey started at 6am and involved small groups of surveyors standing at designated points. The survey was conducted at Masons Falls , Candlebark track and Watsons Creek track.

Because of the recent fires it was decided to start with an area that was burnt extremely hot, not so hot and one that was not burnt at all.

From 7am, the surveyors found the Male Lyrebirds were calling in all sites. Volunteers were able to take a bearing from where the call was heard and record this information.

Male Lyrebirds call mostly during winter, when they construct and maintain an open mound in the bush. They then sing and dance on the mound to display courtship, to potential mates.

No birds were seen, but volunteers were able to hear the birds calling. At Masons Falls there were 10 sites surveyed and all people heard them call – an average of two birds heard at each site. Watsons Creek and Candlebark track had six sites surveyed each, and most heard an average of three birds at each site in these areas.

Much of the information from previous surveys was lost during the fires. If anyone has information from past Lyrebirds Surveys, the Kinglake Parks Victoria office would appreciate a copy. Please contact Parks Victoria on 13 1963.
