Fall of stack at Loch Ard Gorge precinct
28 Sep 2009

Parks Victoria has received many enquiries regarding the fall of a rock stack off the coast in the Port Campbell National Park along Victoria's Great Ocean Road.

The stack that collapsed is not one of the eight remaining Apostles that can be seen from the viewing platform (and known as the Twelve Apostles).

Parks Victoria understands the stack that collapsed is the smallest of the group known as the "Three Sisters" and is just out from the Razorback Lookout at Loch Ard.

The collapse is a reflection of the changing coastline that is the Twelve Apostles and the Great Ocean Road. Nature is constantly shaping and reshaping it. Erosion is a significant issue in the area and creates the striking features for which this limestone coastline is known. So there will always be many wonderful sights for visitors.

The fall poses no obvious threat to public safety. However, because erosion is a significant issue in the area, facilities such as viewing platforms, cliff top walkways and beach accesses are continually monitored to ensure they are safe.

This collapse follows a cliff collapse a kilometre from the Visitor’s lookout at the Twelve Apostles earlier this month, the fall of the Island Archway in the Loch Ard Gorge precinct and Man's Head at Croft's Bay in the Bay of Islands National Park in July. And prior to that, a large stack fell at the Twelve Apostles in July 2005.

Parks Victoria is investigating another stack fall out to sea and is still to confirm the collapse due the extreme weather currently being experienced.

The iconic views of the Twelve Apostles and the visitor experience along the coastline of the Great Ocean Road remain spectacular.
