Volunteers protect our beautiful coastline
13 Oct 2009

The environment of the Great Ocean Walk around Apollo Bay is getting much needed help from Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) in partnership with Parks Victoria.

The Great Ocean Walk has environmental significance and it is important to maintain the walk as a high quality, sustainable nature-based walking icon for the state of Victoria. With the help of Conservation Volunteers, and as part of the Parks Champions program, Parks Victoria can ensure minimal impacts to the natural and cultural values, while retaining the best possible experience. The walk passes through the Great Otway National Park and the Port Campbell National Park and overlooks the Twelve Apostles Marine National Park and Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary.

During the 12 -16 October volunteers are undertaking walking track maintenance activities, cleaning hike-in campsites and restoring native vegetation and habitat along the walk.

Park Champions is a coordinated community partnership between CVA and Parks Victoria which has been running since July 2006. Parks Champions aims to provide opportunities for the community to volunteer in some of Victoria's most spectacular Parks and contribute to the management of both natural and cultural values and Visitor Services.

Since 2006, CVA has put in more than 1200 volunteer project days in 90 Parks Victoria locations across Victoria, planting over 68,000 plants and removing introduced weeds from an area of more than three hundred hectares.

Conservation Volunteers Australia is Australia's leading organisation for practical conservation, completing more than 2000 conservation projects across Australia every year. Community participation in our projects has resulted in more than 1.2 million trees being planted in the past 12 months and more than 10 million trees being planted over the past decade.

Conservation Volunteers and Parks Victoria invite you to explore and enjoy Victoria's national parks while helping to preserve these natural treasures. As a Park Champion you can volunteer one day a week in and around Melbourne or you can spend a week with a team of volunteers in some of Victoria's most famous national parks.

Conservation Volunteers Australia welcomes everyone who shares a love of the outdoors and a commitment to the Australian environment.
