Point Nepean National Park

Podcasts are available for each of the four main walks within Point Nepean National Park, along with five on the history of the park. The podcasts enable you to hear about these walks or learn more about the areas history before you make your way to the park, or download them onto your MP3 player and listen to them as you enjoy the park.

This will give you an overview of the park and information to help you to enjoy a safe visit.

Walk 1- Walter Pisterman Heritage Walk (695kb)

This wonderful short walk (1km return) takes you through coastal vegetation to the Port Phillip Bay Coastline at Observatory Point.  Wander along the beach and enjoy the views to Port Phillip Heads or view the remains of the cattle quarantine jetty built in 1879.

Walk 2 - Cheviot Hill Discovery Walk (988kb)

Cheviot Hill is the highest spot at Point Nepean and affords extensive views. You will see Cheviot Beach, where the vessel Cheviot was wrecked in 1887 and from which former Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared in 1967 and the rip, where many ships have been wrecked since the early days of European settlement.

Walk 3 - Fort Pearce & Eagles Nest Heritage Walk (371kb)

Once an important part of Port Phillip's defences, this area is now abandoned providing wild and wind swept vantage points. Enjoy the spectacular bay and ocean views from the Battery Observation Point. View the fort from lookouts or descend the concrete ramp to its lower levels while learning more about fortifications.

Walk 4 - Fort Nepean Walk (567kb)

Fort Nepean was a vital part of Victoria 's defences for more than 60 years, from the 1880's to 1945. Allow atleast an hour to explore the site and learn more about the events that lead to the building of the fort, developments in defence technology over the years, and the lives of those who served there.

History 1 - Local Vegetation (8,739kb)

This Podcast features local ecologist Gidja Walker, who describes the significant flora at Point Nepean, in particular the threatened Coastal Moonah Woodland vegetation community.

History 2 - First Shots (411kb)

Point Nepean has an important place in the history of both World Wars. The first British / Australian shots in both WW1 and WW2 were fired from Point Nepean. Hear more about this interesting fact.

History 3 - SS Cheviot Shipwreck (564kb)

Learn more about the ill-fated journey of the SS Cheviot (1870-1887).The Cheviot became one of Victoria 's worst maritime disasters when it lost its propeller shortly after leaving Port Phillip Heads. It was blown ashore near Point Nepean with the loss of 37 lives.

History 4 - Happy Valley (14,242kb)

Happy Valley was an army camp at Point Nepean. Hear what life was like at ‘Happy' Valley from George Warr, Engineer who helped establish the camp in 1942, and the story of the Italian POW's believed to have been at the camp.

History 5 - Fort Pearce (1,254kb)

Learn more about the history of Fort Pearce, including the role that the Australian Army Women's Auxiliary Service personnel played.
