Volunteer opportunities
Many volunteers contribute valuable hours to the Dandenong Ranges Gardens through friends groups, garden guides, horticultural assistance and project work. New volunteers are always welcome.

We interview and place volunteers where they are needed most. If you have an enthusiasm for gardens and the great outdoors then you are just the person we need.

About the gardens

The Dandenong Ranges Gardens are situated in the Dandenong Ranges, approximately 50 km from the Melbourne city centre. The gardens are in a mountainous area about 400 m above sea level and the natural vegetation is Mountain Ash, Eucalyptus regnans forest. As such the gardens contain many cool climate trees, shrubs and perennials, some of which are unable to be grown in other areas of Melbourne.

The gardens group comprises four gardens

  • National Rhododendron Gardens
  • Alfred Nicholas Gardens
  • George Tindale Garden
  • Pirianda Garden

And two arboreta

  • RJ Hamer Arboretum
  • Mount Dandenong Arboretum

Work placement program for overseas Horticultural students

The work experience program we offer has been developed since November 1998. We have hosted Horticultural students from Holland, Germany, France and Ireland. The program allows students who are doing their work placements, to work alongside qualified Horticulturalists and is primarily focused on the development of practical horticultural skills. Your work placement can be tailored to your needs. Placements are also offered to people currently working in the field of Horticulture.

Work placements are unpaid, however while undertaking the program Parks Victoria offer students free accommodation at Tindale House, a four bedroom residence in the Tindale Garden. The house is located in Sherbrooke, right in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges. Staff can help students to visit places of interest on the weekends and put them in contact with other horticultural organisations.

Become a guide

Spring is the busy season and individuals from all backgrounds are encouraged to become volunteer guides at the National Rhododendron Garden. Welcome visitors to the gardens, lead group tours and tell people about the Dandenongs attractions. Friendly and experienced guides and a training program will help you develop your skills.

Contact the volunteer coordinator if you are interested in joining us for the spring season.

Work experience opportunities (tertiary & secondary)

If you are a secondary or tertiary student looking for work experience opportunities look no further.
