Spiders
Spiders
There are two main kinds of spiders - those that build webs and those that don't. All spiders have eight legs. In Australia, the bird eating spider is the largest and yes, it can eat birds!

Beautiful but dangerous!
Careful! Most spiders have poison and fangs! It's fun to find them, watch them, but keep your distance!

Spiders only bite if disturbed.

Try this...
In the above picture, there are a number of different spiders. See how many you can find.

Look out!
See how many different spider webs you can find in the bush. What sort of things have the spiders caught in them? Write them in the space below. Remember the web is sticky, it can catch living and non-living things, but don't break the spiders' webs!

What's one thing all spiders have in common?

How spiders eat
How would you eat if you had no teeth? Spiders have developed a great technique. They have fangs which they use to inject poison into their victims. This dissolves the insides of their prey, which they then suck out. Yummy!

Next time you are drinking a milkshake, with a straw, imagine you are a spider sucking up its food prey! Yum! Yum!

Why do you think
There are hard bits left over from the spider's food prey. Why?

Draw a spider
Draw a spider in 3 different positions:
  • Waiting for its prey
  • Wrapping its prey up
  • Hanging its prey in the web to eat later

People use webs to catch food as well. What do we call them?
