Marine Mapping
There are a number of websites that allow maps and images of the marine environment to be generated that may be useful for students to explore. Some of these have layers of information that can be added or removed to make the map show details of interest.
- DSE Marine Map – developed for Victoria and showing natural and human features of Victoria’s coast. Layers include natural communities, bathymetry, and human uses. DSE marine map
- AMSIS - The Australian Marine Spatial Information System contains over 80 layers of information including maritime boundaries, bathymetry, physical and environmental information, legal interests, fisheries and shipping that has been sourced from Geoscience Australia, other Australian government agencies and some industry sources. www.ga.gov.au/amsis/index.jsp
- Google Earth – This popular software includes a large number of images that allow the coast of Victoria to be studied. Some section of Victoria’s coast is provided in great detail and a number of areas that are included in the Marine National Park system have high resolution of the shallow waters. These could provide a useful extension to the shallow water mapping exercise provided in Activity 3. earth.google.com/
