Introduction

Parks Victoria has developed this Marine Mapping Education Resource Kit to support the Marine Mapping Education DVD. This 15-20 minute DVD highlights details from the recent marine mapping program. The story sees a group of Victorian high school students visiting Bells Beach in Point Addis Marine National Park as part of an investigation of Marine National Parks.

They are joined at locations including Pt Addis, Queenscliff and Nepean Bay by Victorian Minister for the Environment John Thwaites, Parks Victoria Rangers, and a Marine Scientist, who answer the student’s questions on a journey of discovery by focussing on the recent findings from the marine mapping program.

Copies of this DVD are available from Parks Victoria Information Centre and have been distributed to all Victorian secondary schools.

Key Understandings for the Marine Mapping Education Resource Kit

  1. Victoria’s marine environment is unique and diverse with 85% of species occurring no where else.
  2. Victoria has a comprehensive system of 24 Marine National Parks and Marine Sanctuaries that provide full protection for the natural and cultural values of these areas.
  3. Parks Victoria’s marine mapping research program provides an opportunity for discovery and understanding of what is on the sea floor (including natural/biological, cultural and physical information).
  4. Many parts of Victoria are now under water but were once home for Victoria’s Indigenous people and are considered “Country”.
  5. Whilst human activity on land has a direct impact on the health of Victoria’s marine environment, there are many things we at can do at school, work and home to care for our marine and coastal environments.
