1. Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS)

The Marine Mapping Education Resource Kit has been developed to target students working with the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) at Levels 4 upwards although teachers can adapt the activities to suit other levels.

Discipline Based Learning

The Learning Domain for the Discipline Based Learning Strand is largely in Geography although certain activities can be incorporated into other domains including Science and History.

Specifically the Marine Mapping Education Resource Kit addresses the following standards:

Level 4: The Humanities – Geography

At Level 4, students use atlases, street directories and town plan maps to accurately describe the distance, direction and location of places. They identify features from maps, satellite images, and oblique photographs. They draw sketch maps of their neighbourhood using simple mapping conventions such as title, scale, north point and legend. They research, collect, record and describe data obtained through field study surveys and measurements to form conclusions about the use of resources.

Level 5: The Humanities – Geography

At Level 5, students collect geographical information from electronic and print media, including satellite images and atlas maps and analyse, evaluate and present it using a range of forms. They construct overlay theme maps using map conventions of scale, legend, title, and north point. They identify and gather geographical information from fieldwork and organise, process and communicate it using a range of written, oral, visual and graphic forms.

Level 6: The Humanities – Geography

At Level 6, students accurately interpret information on different types of maps and photographs at a range of scales, and use map evidence to support explanations, draw inferences and predict associated outcomes. They collect and collate information gathered from fieldwork observations and present their findings observing geographical presentation conventions.

Physical, Personal and Social Learning

The Learning Domain for the Physical, Personal and Social Learning Strand includes Civics and Citizenship as applied to Community Engagement programs that address catchment issues impacting on the marine environment.

This Domain facilitates the practice of citizenship skills, the exploration and development of values and dispositions to support citizenship and the empowerment of informed decision making. Teaching of civics engages students in active interaction with the community. In a world where people, environments, economics and politics are inextricably linked, and where dislocation and change is accelerating, a strong sense of personal identity developed through participation in communities is a sound basis from which to connect with the world

Interdisciplinary Learning

The Learning Domain for the Interdisciplinary Learning Strand includes Communication, Design, Creativity and Technology, and Information and Communications Technology. Themes explored through the Marine Mapping Education Resource Kit lend themselves well to the application of new technology to building an understanding of Victoria’s marine environment.

“Communication helps to construct all learning and is central to the capacity to demonstrate and convey what one has learned in different contexts and to different people. This domain assists students to understand that language and discourse differ in different disciplines and that there is a need to learn particular literacy’s involved in each task.”
