The activities were developed in partnership with the Dolphin Research Institute, by the 2003 Summer Scholarship students, Sarah Butler and Ruth Harper (sponsored by Parks Victoria).
The activity book is an interpretive tool, designed to assist Park Rangers and other educators in engaging young Victorians (and their families):
- in active learning about the values of Marine National Parks and Marine Sanctuaries (MNP&MS),
- to promote understanding of the benefits of MNP&S and
- encourage appropriate use and protection.
How teachers use the book
Each activity is based on a special message about the marine national parks and marine sanctuaries (see the table below). The whole book or individual pages/activities may be used:
- As class activity resource to help students understand the values and benefits marine national park's, or
- As an introductory or follow up educational activity, before an excursion to a marine national park. Why not ask a park ranger if they can meet you on site to chat to your students or take a guided walk?
- As a fun activity at your school fete or local festivals. Photocopy the individual activities for students and parents to join in.
Key Messages
Each activity may be used to deliver a specific key message about the MNP&S. By doing the activity with children, you can lead into discussion, or follow up activity like a beachcombing or a rock pool ramble and explore the messages it delivers.
