Good Neighbour program
Working together across public and private
land
Pest plants and animals have a significant impact on Victoria's
natural environment and affect the productivity and amenity
of land. Weeds and pests do not recognise the boundary between
private and public land, so addressing this challenge requires
a cooperative approach between Government and the community.
That's why the Good Neighbour Program (GNP) was started
in the early 1990s.
The Good Neighbour Program is administered by the Department
of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and incorporates activities
on public land managed by DSE and Parks Victoria, to provide
a coordinated and prioritised approach to treating pest plants
and animals on public land at the interface with private land.
Each year the GNP funds between 400 - 500 projects across
Victoria. Projects targeting control of animals including
rabbits, foxes, pigs, goats and wild dogs as well as priority
weed species are implemented on the public land interface
with private land.
