South Channel Fort (Local Port of Port Phillip, Point Nepean National Park)

South Channel Fort is a unique and highly significant 19th Century artificial island. Built during the 1880s, it is part of the strategic defence network of Port Phillip. The island contains gun emplacements, a labyrinth of underground passages and magnificent panoramic views over Port Phillip. It is also a breeding site for the White faced Storm-Petrel and other important birdlife.

South Channel Fort can only be accessed by boat. Once on the island visitors can take a walking tour around the island and learn about the important heritage of the site.

Visitors can access the underground keep of South Channel Fort through a Licenced Tour Operator only.

South Channel Fort (Point Nepean National Park) - Tunnels closed

The South Channel Fort and Jetty remains open to public access. However, all access into the sub terrain tunnels/ keep (via Licensed Tour Operators) is currently restricted due to safety concerns - pending further engineering/ technical assessments.

Closures - Fort Nepean

Engine house walking track closed until further notice.  Access to Gun emplacements 5 & 6, Engine House, Battery Observation Posts restricted.

Point Nepean Opening and Closing Times - vehicle access

Point Nepean National Park -  Gate opening and closing is currently 5am open and 5pm close to vehicles. Vehicles can exit the park at anytime.  Pedestrian and bike access available all hours.  

Discovery Tents expansion: February – late 2024

Works to expand the ‘Discovery Tents’ campground at Point Nepean National Park are nearing completion, with re-vegetation and planting underway. 

During this time, access to the new camping area will be temporarily closed to allow time for the grass and plantings to establish. Bunting and signage is in place to help direct visitors.
