Merri Creek Parklands
(Marran baba meaning ‘body of mother’)
The consultation period
for the draft
2009 master plan has now ended.
A Discovery
Day was held at the park site on Saturday 20 June, with
guided tours and a display of the plans.
A new regional park for Melbourne’s
north is being established along a 15 kilometre stretch of
the Merri Creek. The 840 hectare Parklands will extend from
the Ring Road in Thomastown through to Craigieburn East Road
in Craigieburn.
The parklands will protect native grassland sites of state
and national significance in this rapidly urbanising growth
corridor of Melbourne, as well as providing opportunities
to exercise, relax, socialise and enjoy nature.
Galada Tamboore
The first site to be opened to the community will be Galada
Tamboore (Wurundjeri for ‘creek waterhole’) located between
the residential areas of Thomastown and Campbellfield. Galada
Tamboore is a large, bowl-shaped area of 320ha which includes
the spectacular Barry Road Gorge, a site of State significance.
The Victorian Government has committed $2.8 million to stage
one of the parklands, which will include building trails into
the park and providing visitor facilities such as picnic tables
and a carpark. The popular Merri Creek Trail, which currently
runs from the Yarra River through to the Ring Road, will be
extended north into Galada Tamboore.
Funding has also been committed for environmental works within the Cooper Street and Criaigeburn Grasslands.
