Werribee River Regional Park
The draft
2009 master plan for Werribee River Regional Park replaces
the 2006 draft management plan. The tables in the 2006 plan
are not applicable to the 2009 plan. Following consultation
on the draft 2009 master plan, a new revised management
plan will be developed.
A Discovery
Day was held at the park site on Saturday 27 June, with
guided tours and a display of the plans. The consultation
period for the draft 2009 master plan has now ended.
Werribee will soon be home to a new 230 hectare park along the Werribee River, featuring wetlands, coastal saltmarsh and views of spectacular escarpments including the K Road cliffs.
The park site extends along the western bank of the Werribee
River from the Princes Freeway/Mallby Bypass to the mouth
of the river at Port Phillip Bay. The site is of environmental
significance, providing wetland habitat for a range of waterbirds
protected under international wildlife treaties.
The new park will be a place for recreation and socialisation
and will include facilities such as cycling and walking
trails, a picnic and barbecue area and a pedestrian bridge
linking to the historic Werribee Park.
The Victorian Government has committed $4.36 million to
develop stage one of the park, with a focus on providing
a shared walking/cycling trail and the provision of visitor
facilities such as picnic tables and seating.
Managed by Parks Victoria, a steering committee has been
established to guide the future direction of the park. Organisations
represented on the committee include: Wyndham City Council,
Werribee Open Range Zoo and Melbourne Water (Western Treatment
Plant).
