Project statuses

• Sports Facility Improvements Project: planning for projects are currently underway.
• Energy Efficiency Upgrades Project: assessments of buildings are complete. We're now in the process of finalising the project's scope.
• Sports Management Plan: a draft plan has been developed. Community will soon be able to view and provide feedback on the draft plan when it's released on the Engage Victoria website.

The projects

Projects are being delivered on the Traditional Lands of the Bunurong people.

Home to more than 40 clubs, with 6,000 members, across 16 different land and water sports – Melbourne’s Albert Park is a hub for the local area’s growing community sports clubs. We’re delivering a range of projects across the park to improve facilities for the local community. 


Sports Facility Improvements Project 
While a diverse range of clubs use the park, many of its facilities are ageing and in need of upgrading. It’s also important facilities are suitable for the increasing number of women participating in sports across the park. 

To ensure facilities are fit-for-purpose and can be used for many years to come, we’re delivering:

  • Change room upgrades at the Stuart King and Beaurepaire Pavilions
  • Lighting upgrades at Oval 1 and 13
  • Minor facility upgrades at Field 6 (baseball diamond-shaped area) and Field 10
  • Sailing precinct upgrades

These projects are aligned with the priorities of Albert Park’s Master Plan. Works on each project will be scheduled to minimise disruption to sporting teams.

 

Energy Efficiency Upgrades Project

We are delivering an energy transformation to the park by installing solar panels across some facilities used by local sporting clubs. The sustainable energy project is an important step towards making the park greener and will help community sports clubs to save on their utility bills.


Sports Management Plan
As part of the Albert Park Master Plan, we’re working with sports clubs to develop a Sports Management Plan that will support the ongoing use of the precinct in an efficient and sustainable way over the next 15-20 years.

Visitors

The Sports Facility Improvements Project will promote access to sports across the community, offering everyone a chance to get out into nature and lead a more healthy and active life.

Planning for the next 15-20 years, the Sports Management Plan will ensure Albert Park remains a local sporting hub for local clubs well into the future.   

 

Environment

By providing renewable energy to community facilities, the Energy Efficiency Upgrades Project is an important step towards making the park more sustainable.

 

Economy

The Energy Efficiency Upgrades Project will cut energy bill costs and help put money back into the pockets of local sporting organisations.

Project funding

  • The Australian Government has invested $5 million for the Sports Facility Improvements Project.
  • The Victorian Government has invested $1.6 million to deliver the Energy Efficiency Upgrades Project.
 

Environmental and cultural heritage management 

Environmental and cultural heritage assessments have been undertaken to inform works. 

 

Putting safety first

Visitor safety is our number one priority when considering risk in parks. 

While nature will always be unpredictable, our projects and maintenance works help minimise risks and help people explore the great outdoors safely.

Parks Victoria is responsible for continuously managing and maintaining over 50,000 pieces of infrastructure across the state annually. 

We’re also delivering new projects to help visitors get into nature. These are thoroughly planned and prepared to keep people and projects separate – and safe.

When visiting a park where projects are happening, especially during construction, it’s important that people follow the direction of signs, stay out of fenced and restricted areas, and listen to Parks Victoria staff and work crews.

 

Who are we working with?

We’re working with local sporting clubs to help inform these projects, ensure the upgrades meet their needs and that minimal impact is experienced during works. 
To deliver these works, we’re also working with the Australian Government, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Sport and Recreation Victoria, the City of Port Phillip and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.

 

Access changes

There are currently no access changes to the park, however there may be some areas with restricted access once construction begins on the Sports Facility Improvements Project and Energy Efficiency Projects.

We will update the community prior to works commencing.
